WE NEED YOU!

Volunteers are very important at Austin Academy.  The kids may think they don't want you here, but the children and the school still need you!  I challenge each of you, Moms, Dads, Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles to sign up for atleast one volunteer opportunity this school year.  There are so many different opportunities available that most everyone can find something that fits their interests and schedule.  Even if you think you will NEVER be able to volunteer, go ahead and fill out the paperwork now.  You never know what might happen this winter for next spring and if you do become available, you will be prepared.  I promise if you don't want to be bothered, you won't be.  Together we can make a difference!  Questions? Marie Purser at 214-862-4379 or MariePurserPTA@aol.com.

Forms are available from the school office or on the GISD Website.

Even an hour or two can make a difference. To assure the safety of our students, all volunteers must undergo a one-time background check prior to participation each school year. Each time you arrive at the school to volunteer, please check in at the school office and sign the Volunteer Log. Your volunteer hours help the school obtain grants, so PLEASE RECORD THEM!

If parents/students assist in any way at Concerts/Performances, that is volunteer time... making uniforms, costumes, delivering/transporting instruments or equipment, etc. is considered volunteer time as long as the individual is not being paid for the service being performed. If you chaperone a group of students on a trip for the weekend, your time is considered volunteer time.

Please be sure you log your volunteer hours worked in the white notebook on the counter in the school office.  Austin Academy benefits from the hours worked in a direct and an indirect way.  The indirect includes some of these hours translating into the hiring of teacher aides.

Hours that can be put in the log include:

  • For Teachers: those that fall outside of their paid jobs and supports the kids, such as PTA meetings and sports.
  • For parents, etc.: any PTA meetings, school sports, help at school, field trips, field days, doing any work for the teachers (in or out of school).
If you are interested in helping in any of the following ways, please view our PTA Board Member Roster and send your comments or questions to the appropriate committee chairperson. THANK YOU!!!

Thank you for volunteering!

Volunteer Opportunities:

Garland ISD has mandated that all persons who volunteer with the children and school events, must complete a criminal background check before volunteering.  This procedure is crucial in keeping our children safe.  If you have not completed the form, please do so soon and return it to school as soon as possible.   You may pick up a form in the school office or request one by email from Mary Ellen Sargent.

  • Room Parent - If you've never been a Room Parent before, or it's been awhile, here is a summary of the "duties":
    • Each month (or at least once every 6-week period), each class has a party during homeroom period.
    • Besides the parties, each grades' Room Parents are responsible for obtaining food donations (cookies, candy, etc.) for one lunch-time Bake Sale, and snacks and chaperones for three school dances.
    • If you are fortunate enough that you are not the only Room Parent in your class, you may divide the calling list so each of you has fewer calls or e-mail reminders to make each month, or you could take turns doing all the calling/e-mailing month by month.

    HR: 1:45 - 2:10

  • Field Trip Chaperone

  • Dance Chaperone - You may help with as many dances throughout the year as you would like. Although all grade levels may attend the school dances, each dance is sponsored by a certain grade.
    • In all, we will need a minimum of 10 chaperones for each dance. Chaperones should arrive about 10-15 minutes before the dance to sign in and get their assignments. Dances begin at 7:00 p.m. and end at 9:00 p.m.
    • At each dance, parents provide snacks for the kids. If possible, please bring a bag of candy, cookies, or similar type treat for the snack table.

  • Help with Bake Sales - Bake or purchase store-bought items for our periodic lunch-time sales, and/or volunteer to work the sales tables during all or a portion of a sale.

  • Help in the Clinic - We are always in need of volunteers to help occasionally in the clinic. This requires a short first aid training class. If you have had the Red Cross class provided through the GISD, and would like to help out in the Austin clinic, or if you have not had the class, but are interested in being a clinic volunteer, please contact the school nurse. Occasionally volunteers are needed to help with vision/hearing and spinal screenings. This does NOT require a special class. If you are interested in helping with these screenings, please feel free to do so.
