Volunteering in Our Schools

For the safety of our students, volunteer applicants who will work one-on-one with a student or chaperone an overnight field trip will be subject to a criminal history check.

For volunteers who are subject to a background check: both the Volunteer Application Form and Criminal History Check must be submitted to your campus office to be eligible to volunteer in our schools.

For additional information, visit the Garland ISD Volunteer Information page.

Room Parent
If you've never been a Room Parent before, or it's been awhile, here is a summary of the duties:

  • Obtain phone number and email list of your Advisory class parents and give this list to the PTA Grade-Level Room Chairperson. You will then co-ordinate with the grade-level room rep to make sure your parents receive any announcements that the PTA and school send out.
  • Each grades' Room Parents are responsible for calling/emailing their parents to get food donations (they must be store bought, individually wrapped with NO Nuts!!) and chaperons for the three school dances and the snack attacks.
  • If you are fortunate enough that you are not the only Room Parent in your class, you may divide the calling list so each of you has fewer calls or e-mail reminders to make, or you could take turns doing all the calling/e-mailing month by month.

Dance Chaperon
You may help with as many dances throughout the year as you would like. There are three dances: The first is 6th grade only. The other two (one in December and one in May) are for all grades.

  • In all, we will need a minimum of 10 chaperons for each dance. Chaperons should arrive about 10-15 minutes before the dance to sign in and get their assignments. Dances begin at 4:00 p.m. and end at 6:00 p.m.
  • At each dance, parents provide snacks for the kids. They must be store bought, individually wrapped with NO Nuts!!

Snack Attack
Purchase store-bought items (No snacks with nuts) for our periodic snack sales, and/or volunteer to work the sales tables during all or a portion of a sale. Check out the Snack Attack page for more details.

Record Your Hours

Each time you arrive at the school to volunteer, please check in at the school office and sign the Volunteer Log. Your volunteer hours help the school obtain grants, so PLEASE RECORD THEM!

If parents/students assist in any way at Concerts/Performances, that is volunteer time... making uniforms, costumes, delivering/transporting instruments or equipment, etc. is considered volunteer time as long as the individual is not being paid for the service being performed. If you chaperone a group of students on a trip for the weekend, your time is considered volunteer time.

Please be sure you log your volunteer hours worked in the white notebook on the counter in the school office.  Austin Academy benefits from the hours worked in a direct and an indirect way.  The indirect includes some of these hours translating into the hiring of teacher aides.

Hours that can be put in the log include:

  • For Teachers: those that fall outside of their paid jobs and supports the kids, such as PTA meetings and sports.
  • For parents, etc.: any PTA meetings, school sports, help at school, field trips, field days, doing any work for the teachers (in or out of school).
